Thai Students Sings After Their Release From Prison

Fourteen Thai students were released from Bangkok Remand Prison just before 6am on Wednesday, July 8. The release followed Tuesday’s ruling by Thailand’s military court refusing a police prosecutor’s bid to extend their detention. The students, members of activist group the New Democracy Movement, were arrested on June 25 after organising a peaceful rally in Bangkok.

They were charged with inciting unrest under section 116 of the Criminal Code.

Human Rights Watch described the arrests as “arbitrary” and said they “demonstrate the military junta’s unwillingness to ease its oppressive rule”. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on Tuesday called for the Thai government to immediately drop criminal charges against the students and urged " the Government to review its use of laws that limit freedom of expression and freedom of assembly in line with its obligations under international human rights law."
