Thousands of Mourners Pay Tribute to Slain Opposition Leader Boris Nemtsov

Thousands of mourners descended on Moscow to pay tribute to slain opposition leader Boris Nemtsov at his funeral on Tuesday, March 3. Crowds lined the streets of the Russian capital to view his coffin before the funeral procession to Troyekurovskoye cemetery, where Nemtsov was laid to rest.

Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister under President Boris Yeltsin, Russia’s first post-Soviet president, was fatally shot on a bridge near the Kremlin on February 27.

The BBC reported that Russian authorities had barred several EU politicians from attending the funeral.

Alexei Navalny, a prominent activist and critic of Vladimir Putin, was denied permission to leave jail, where he is serving a 15-day sentence, the BBC said. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
