Tourist Withdraws Large Sum From Greek ATM, as Restrictions Remain for Locals

On the day the country officially defaulted on an IMF repayment, capital controls remained in place at Greek banks. The limits applied only to Greek nationals, restricting them to €60 per day. Tourists, as this video shows, were able withdraw larger sums. The person in this video withdraws €600, and was filmed doing so by the owner of a yachting company.

In a letter to the heads of the European Commission, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank dated June 30 and published by the Financial Times on July 1, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said the country would accept most of the conditions set down by the country’s bailout creditors. However, a referendum on the deal was still due to go ahead on July 5.

In the German parliament on the same day, Chancellor Angela Merkel said there would be no bailout programme prior to the referendum. Credit: YouTube/Kavas Yachting
