Typhoons Goni, Atsani Churn in the Pacific

Typhoons Goni (left) and Atsani (right) were churning up the western Pacific early on Tuesday, August 18. Goni is likely to be very near Taiwan by Sunday, while Atsani is moving more to the northwest and could affect Japan by early next week.

Weather Underground’s Bob Henson says the two powerful storms are too far apart – and likely to stay that way – to be influenced by the Fujiwhara effect, in which two close storms begin to rotate around a midway point. Credit: Japan Meteorological Agency
