UN High Commissioner 'Deeply Shocked' Over Reports of Missing Migrants

Antonio Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said on April 15 that he was “deeply shocked” over reports that hundreds of migrants were missing after their boat sank in the Mediterranean over the weekend.

The Italian Coast Guard has intercepted thousands of migrants, travelling across the Mediterranean from Libya, in recent weeks, who hold hopes of reaching the Italian coast line.

“I was deeply shocked when hearing the news that another boat, an overcrowded boat capsized in the Mediterranean and where 400 people died,” Guterres said. “This only demonstrates how important it is to have a robust rescue-at-sea mechanism, in the central Mediterranean.” Credit: YouTube/United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
