UN Says Cholera Outbreak Is Slowing as Burundi Refugees Recover

Many refugees fleeing into Tanzania from conflict in Burundi find their first point of settlement in Kagunga, on the banks of Lake Tanganyika, before being transferred to Kigoma by boat. On May 19, the government of Tanzania declared an outbreak of cholera in the region with the World Food Programme (WFP) reporting about 30 deaths.

On June 1 the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that, in Kagunga, new health and sanitation facilities had started to slow the spread and impact of the disease. The UNHCR produced this video report outlining the current situation. Credit: YouTubeUNHCR
