UNHCR Documents Migrant Life in Calais

This footage from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) documents the experiences and conditions of some 2,500 migrants and asylum seekers in Calais, France, living in abandoned buildings, tents, and other makeshift shelters, hoping to find a way to Britain.

Mazhur, from Syria, travelled for six months to reach Calais. “People are crying here and saying they wish they had died back in Syria,” he says. “I thought Europe was the heart of civilization, but the reality is otherwise.” Credit: YouTube/United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
