Unrest Breaks Out in the Hague After Tourist Dies in Police Custody

Civil unrest broke out in The Hague on June 29 following the death in police custody of a Caribbean tourist. Police arrested 16 people, and said there could be further arrests, according to media reports.

The victim, Mitch Henriquez, was pinned to the ground before being loaded into a police van on June 27 after a concert in a city park. He died in the hospital the next day.

The prosecutor initially reported Henriquez became unwell in the van, but the statement was retracted when video emerged that appeared to show Henriquez unconscious before being put into the police van.
