US Navy Rejects Russian Account of Encounter With Jets in Black Sea

The USS Ross reported an encounter with Russian SU-24 aircraft while on patrol in the Black Sea on May 30. RIA Novosti said the jets had been scrambled as the US destroyer approached Russian territorial waters. This claim was rejected by the Pentagon and the US Navy. A statement by the Navy said the “Ross observed the routine flights of SU-24 aircraft and had no interaction.”

The statement continued: “Ross continued on her mission after observing the aircraft return to base. At no time did Ross act aggressively nor did she deviate from her planned operations.”

Sputnik News said that, according to a source in the Russian military, “the jets which warned off the USS Ross were not routine patrol flights.” Credit: US Navy
