World Food Programme Scales Up Operation in Ukraine

On February 19, as a ceasefire struggled to hold, the World Food Programme (WFP) announced that it had scaled up its operation in eastern Ukraine. The WFP operation aims “to feed 190,000 vulnerable people displaced by the conflict and civilians trapped near the frontlines.”

Speaking in Sloviansk, Jonathan Dupont of WFP TV said the conflict had left over one million displaced in the country. He said that in places where markets are functioning, WFP provides vouchers people can exchange for food, helping to maintain the local economy. In other places, food is provided directly.
