#Youstink Protesters Rally as 'Wall of Shame' Removed in Beirut

Lebanese activists rallied in central Beirut on Tuesday, August 25, as a concrete wall, installed by authorities just 24 hours before to quell anti-government protests, was removed.

The wall was erected around the seat of the government after violent clashes broke out over the weekend between security forces and “You Stink” protesters, who are demanding that the government resolve a garbage crisis in the capital. Demonstrators say that the trash issue is emblematic of endemic corruption and poor public services.

Prime Minister Tammam Salam ordered the wall, which has been called a “wall of shame” by protesters, to be removed Tuesday following an emergency cabinet meeting, Beirut Bureau Chief for the Associated Press Zeina Karam reported. Credit: Twitter/Hasan Esen
