The Lexus GX550 looks fantastic and offers a lot of capability, excellent outward visibility, and an accommodating interior that gets better and better the more you study it. Our one major gripe: The instruments are somewhat dim in bright daylight.

The Lexus GX550 shares its wheelbase, tread width, twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine, and 10-speed automatic with the upmarket LX600, but it's a tidier size that can be had for a tidier sum.

Visibility is excellent because the hood has a distinct trough, the fender lines help you see the margins, and side windows are cut low.

Even though the GX550 shares the LX600's 112.2-inch wheelbase, it's 3.5 inches shorter and therefore has better approach and departure angles.

Remember the hideous grille on the GX460? We thought we'd never forget, and then the GX550 came along with a welcome bit of rhinoplasty. There's hope for BMW yet.

The twin-turbo 3.4-liter makes 349 horsepower in the GX550 instead of the 409 horses it makes in the LX600, but that still represents a 48-hp increase over the outgoing GX460's V-8.

Both the LX600 and the new GX550 make 479 pound-feet of torque at just 2000 rpm, which is a huge 150-lb-ft boost over the GX460's weak-sauce 329 pound-feet at 3500 rpm.

The Overtrail is a new trim level that leans into the GX's gradually earned reputation among the overlanding set, as it rides on 33-inch tires mounted on 18-inch wheels and has a lockable rear differential, and the E-KDSS system of independently disconnectable anti-roll bars.

Overtrail buyers also get a roof rack, multi-terrain select, multi-terrain monitor system, crawl control, downhill assist control, and other off-road tidbits.

The Premium and Luxury trims are three-row machines that can be configured to seat six or seven, but the Overtrail is strictly a two-row five-seater because deleting the third seat entirely lowers the load floor and expands cargo space.
