Although Mercedes already sells an electric Sprinter van in Europe, for 2024, the eSprinter finally makes its way to the U.S. with a significantly upgraded electric powertrain that provides a range more appropriate for American last-mile delivery.

The eSprinter packs a 113.0-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, with Mercedes claiming a 273-mile range on the European WLTP test cycle.

That should translate to around 230 miles of EPA range, which would put it well ahead of rivals like the Ford E-Transit and the Rivian EDV.

Power is sent rearward via a rear-mounted electric motor that produces either 134 or 201 horsepower, depending on what the buyer chooses.

We drove the higher-output model, which was more than quick enough for city driving and adequate at higher speeds, although the eSprinter tops out at a middling 75 mph.

The eSprinter has a Maximum Range drive mode that decreases output to 107 ponies and turns off climate control but results in truly sluggish acceleration.

Mercedes says the eSprinter can charge at rates up to 115 kW on a DC fast-charger, allowing the battery to go from 10 to 80 percent in 42 minutes.

The eSprinter doesn't have a one-pedal-driving regeneration setting. Instead, the strongest regen level brings the van to a crawl. An automatic mode varies deceleration based on traffic ahead.

The eSprinter's 2624-lb payload capacity is far lower than that of the Ford E-Transit and the Ram ProMaster EV, both of which can carry more than 3000 pounds of cargo.

The cabin is noticeably nicer than the eSprinter's American competition, with soft leather armrests, glossy black trim, and a sharp 10.3-inch touchscreen.
