The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA isn't just another small sedan with a three-pointed star for a badge. The new CLA represents the first step in Mercedes's next stage of EV revolution, with a new platform underpinning the whole shebang.

To prove the new CLA's capability, Mercedes let us ride shotgun in a pre-production prototype on a perilous adventure over a mountain road that's usually closed this time of year.

When it's no longer shrouded in vinyl, it'll be easier to see the visual connections between the new CLA and 2023's Concept CLA that previewed its arrival.

For now, though, we were left with a crimson-clad sedan and an interior shrouded in fabric.

The 2026 CLA will be the first Mercedes-Benz EV to ride on the automaker's new MMA electric-vehicle platform.

A 268-hp motor at the rear sends its power through a two-speed transmission.

All-wheel drive will be available, which adds a 107-hp electric motor up front.
