A Channel 5 drama based on Maxine Carr's part in the Soham murders case has left viewers outraged that it was made, with accusations that it is in poor taste.

Maxine, which airs on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings this week, focuses on Carr's involvement with Ian Huntley and how she provided him with a false alibi to help him cover up the murders of 10-year-old best friends Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002.

But while the drama paints Carr as a victim of abuse, manipulation and control by Huntley, viewers expressed their disgust at the drama and made it clear they had no sympathy for her.

One viewer tweeted: "This feels in extraordinarily bad taste #Maxine"

Someone else agreed: "#Maxine trying really hard to make her out to be a victim here! 15 minutes in and I’m finding it all a bit in bad taste."

Another person asked: "Are we meant to feel sorry for Maxine carr in this? Because no."

Someone else added: "Is it me or are they trying to make me feel sorry for Maxine Carr? Not a chance!"

Others said they had switched off as they felt so uncomfortable about the drama, with one person sharing a photo of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman and writing: "I turned off channel 5. One it’s bad acting but two it’s shocking there making Maxine carr look a victim. These are the victims #riphollyandjessica #maxine #channel5"

Many people questioned why Maxine had been made in the first place, saying that the horrendous murder case should never have inspired a TV drama.

One person tweeted: "Are Channel 5 trying to make us feel sorry for Maxine Carr? A woman who lied & covered for her evil boyfriend A man who killed two beautiful children. It's 20years since this horrendous & awful event & I don't think anyone needs to watch #Maxine"

Someone else asked: "Why have channel 5 made this show…because if it’s to make Maxine Carr look like a victim then it should be pulled. There are many victims and she is NOT one of them."

Another person wrote: "How anybody could watch that drama tonight on ch 5 at 9pm about maxine Carr beggars belief I find myself already upset and angry that this could be shown and people would want to watch this r.i.p."

Someone else added: "If channel 5 had any decency they would pull the plug on this really not fair on Holly and Jessicas family."

Maxine continues tonight at 9pm on Channel 5.
