Views sought over £1m revamp of green space funded with Government levelling up cash
Views are being sought from the public over a pending revamp of Eston recreation ground.
A total of £1.05m has been committed by Redcar and Cleveland Council towards improvements to the green space known as the ‘rec’, which is bounded by Normanby Road, the Trunk Road and Church Lane. The cash is coming out of £20m grant funding allocated to the local authority in last year’s spring Budget as part of the former Government’s Levelling Up Partnerships scheme.
The council said Eston Rec was the primary green space and leisure heart of the area, along with the nearby leisure centre and soon to be rebuilt Eston swimming pool, another project also funded by levelling up money.

A design consultant, Southern Green, was appointed last year and a public consultation has now begun over the design - a proposed masterplan having incorporated elements such as a new skate park, football pitch improvements, outdoor gym equipment, improved footpaths, lighting and furniture and wildlife planting and ponds, along with new trees and landscaping.
Planning permission will also be required with the current timescale anticipating a determination in December. Construction works could start in April next year and be complete by the end of 2025.
The council said: “This exciting development will ultimately increase the usage of Eston recreational ground and encourage physical activity to provide health and wellbeing benefits to local residents and visitors.”
There have been complaints previously about bikers accessing the rec and dog walkers who fail to clear up their pet’s mess. Residents can fill out an online survey with their comments with more information available here.
