Vigil Held for Woman Killed at Minneapolis Protest

A vigil was held in Minneapolis on Monday, June 14, to remember a woman who was killed after a car drove into a group of protesters in the Uptown area of the city late on Sunday.

Deona Marie Erickson Knajdek was the mother of two young girls and would have celebrated her 32nd birthday on Wednesday, according to Minnesota Public Radio.

Police said a suspect was “pulled from the car by protesters” after the crash, and subsequently taken into custody.

In the early hours of Monday, a 33-year-old man was booked into the Hennepin County Jail on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide, driving after a license was canceled, and providing false information to police, Minnesota Public Radio said.

Knajdek was attending a protest on Sunday night to remember Winston Smith, who was shot and killed on June 3 during an attempted arrest.

Knajdek’s brother, Garrett Knajdek, told the Star Tribune his sister “was using her car as a street blockade” when “another vehicle” crashed into it, causing it to hit her. Credit: Jiccarra N. Hollman/@NewsOnPurpose via Storyful
