Vikings has confirmed its final season premiere date and dropped an epic new trailer.

The History channel series will bow out after its sixth season, which has now been confirmed to premiere in the US on Wednesday, December 4 with a two-hour special.

And, it looks like things are about to get extremely bloody, as the Vikings wage their last battle of the series, with the action set to unfold over 20 episodes.

The trailer sees Ivar the Boneless (Alex Hogh Andersen) and Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) gearing up for battle, as their feud reaches its dramatic conclusion.

Due to a mid-season hiatus, the Vikings finale will not air until the middle of next year though – so there's plenty more bone-crunching drama to look forward to yet.

The trailer release and confirmation of the season 6 premiere date follows the announcement that Vikings creator Michael Hirst and MGM are now in discussions for a potential spin-off.

It has also been confirmed that one episode of the final season will be directed by Katheryn Winnick, who plays Queen Lagertha in the series.

Let's just hope her character survives until the end of it...

Vikings airs on History in the US and Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
