Vin Diesel has teased his character Dom's turn to the dark side in Fast & Furious 8, AKA The Fate of the Furious.

Talking to EW, he has revealed that he was "worried" about the "dark road" that Dom goes down in the latest instalment, but outlined why it was important to shake things up.

"In some ways, there was little reason to continue if we weren't going to challenge our characters and the fans' faith in our saga," Diesel explained.

As well as the glorious sight of The Rock taking on a torpedo, the new Fast & Furious 8 trailer suggested that Charlize Theron's villain Cipher has crossed paths with Dom and Co before.

And while he won't confirm that Cipher has been the Big Bad all along, Diesel opened up about the connection between her and Dom's wife Letty (Michelle Rodriguez).

"Everyone in the world thought Letty was dead, including the studio and Michelle Rodriguez. But I fought for her character, because I knew there was something about their relationship that provided a core heart to the saga," he said.

"When she signs up with Owen Shaw [in Fast & Furious 6], she is put on Cipher's radar. It all starts in London, in some ways."

Whatever connection Cipher has to Dom or Letty, it's clear that even though Dom has gone rogue, he's not doing it out of his own choice – with a scene from the trailer hinting that everything is not as it seems.

Fast & Furious 8 arrives in UK cinemas on April 12 and US cinemas on April 14.
