We wanted to believe that Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul's Vince Gilligan would make time in his busy schedule to write for The X-Files season 11. Sadly, it was not to be.

Gilligan has been on fans' wishlist to write for the revival given his long history as a writer-producer on the original X-Files and spin-off The Lone Gunmen back in the day.

Unfortunately, his name was missing when TVLine shared the full lineup of writers working on the new season on Monday (June 26).

Along with the return of X-Files creator Chris Carter will be classic series writers Glen Morgan and James Wong ('Squeeze') and Darin Morgan ('Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose') - all of whom worked on last year's revival miniseries.

Glen Morgan is expected to write two episodes after penning the sublimely creepy 'Home Again' last year.

Newcomers to the writing room will be the sci-fi show's former writing assistants Gabe Rotter and Benjamin Van Allen as well as Chris Carter's own former personal assistant Brad Follmer.

By the way, Brad Follmer is an actual person and not the sleazy FBI Assistant Director of the same name played by Cary Elwes in the original X-Files.

Whatever you think about the writing lineup, surely we can all agree that it will be great to see David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson back as Mulder and Scully. Maybe we'll even get a legitimate resolution to the season 10 finale cliffhanger?

Okay, probably not. The X-Files returns to Fox in the US in 2018.
