Virgin River season 6 finale explained: What happened at Mel and Jack's wedding?

Warning - this article contains major spoilers for Virgin River season six.

There were a lot of moving pieces in Virgin River’s season six finale, so let’s run down the most important moments from the unmissable TV wedding of the year.

This year’s outing was all about Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) saying ‘I do’, but there were plenty of obstacles along the way.

From medical emergencies to family drama and even an unexpected feud, here are the most important parts of the wedding leading up to that jaw-dropping cliffhanger.

Did Mel’s father walk her down the aisle?

Unfortunately, Mel’s father Everett Reid (John Allen Nelson) wasn’t there to witness the ceremony as he was struck down by a heart attack the night before

The pain of nearly losing another dad proved overwhelming to Mel, who needed a pep talk from Jack while Hope McCrea (Annette O’Toole) stalled with a rambling speech about love.

Her boss Vernon ‘Doc’ Mullins (Tim Matheson) was also rather hurt when she asked Everett to walk her down the aisle, dredging up their long-standing feud.

However, the pair eventually reconciled as Everett confessed he had been trying to take his own life the night of his car crash which meant Doc was unable to save the life of a young boy.

Later, once Mel and Jack had said their vows, Everett was able to make enough of a recovery to make a surprise appearance for the couple’s first dance, performing the song he wrote for Mel’s mother he had finally completed after all these years.

Did Mel and Doc make up?

Just before the wedding, Mel and Doc have an intense row, the likes of which they’ve not had since the nurse practitioner first came to Virgin River.

Despite being like a surrogate parent to Mel, she tells him “You’re not my father” when Doc gets angry about how close she’s become to Everett, to the point where she lets him lend a hand during an emergency.

After some cajoling from Hope and Mel, and a heart-to-heart with Everett, Doc eventually comes around and attends the wedding, even walking her down the aisle while her father is recovering in the hospital (though we now know he was also getting ready for a showstopping performance).

Do Brie and Brady get back together?

While wedding planning presented its fair share of hurdles this season, one of the most complicated storylines in this year’s outing of Virgin River was the love quadrangle between Brie Sheridan (Zibby Allen), Dan Brady (Benjamin Hollingsworth), Lark (Elise Gatien) and Mike (Marco Grazzini).

Earlier in the season, Brie slept with Brady after leaving him a drunken voicemail at Mel’s bachelorette party confessing that she “can’t stop thinking about him”.

They later admit their love together at the wedding, though Lark overhears and is left devastated. As the evening draws in, Lark disappears to find her daughter Hazel (Ava Anton), but ominously warns him “this is your fault” and isn’t seen again.

At the end of the night, Brady discovers his bank accounts have been completely drained - Lark has scammed him after all.

Meanwhile, Mike confides in Brie that he wants to spend the rest of his life with her, despite the fact that he somehow knows she slept with Brady. The scene cuts away before Brie reveals her decision, setting up more entanglements in season seven.

What happens to Preacher and Kaia?

Jack’s best friend Preacher (Colin Lawrence) brings the house down with an inspiring speech about the couple of the hour’s courage, but he was clearly still mulling over a heartfelt confession from his new partner Kaia (Kandyse McClure).

Following a difficult first marriage, Kaia admits she isn’t sure she wants to make that kind of commitment again. While Preacher understood, he was clearly disappointed with the prospect of not being able to call Kaia his wife eventually.

However, a rather roundabout metaphor about the wedding photobooth led Kaia to think a little more openly about the idea, and she relents that if there’s anyone she would tie the knot with, it would be Preacher.

What will happen in season seven?

Virgin River’s latest season finale was certainly one to remember, and we haven’t even talked about Jack’s heart-to-heart with his dad Nick (Keith MacKechnie), Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale) and Denny’s (Kai Bradbury) decision to eventually test their daughter for Huntington’s or Muriel’s (Teryl Rothery) impending battle with breast cancer.

There’s also another adorable moment between Hope and Doc, but, later, they go into battle mode when Doc discovers his medical license has been suspended, pending an investigation. Hope clearly suspects there’s an ulterior motive at play, as the nearby town Grace Valley is apparently trying to encroach on Doc’s clinic and force him into early retirement to expand their territory. But Doc won’t be going down without a fight.

Another stunning twist for season seven could be the introduction of a new bundle of joy for Mel and Jack. Although she suffered a miscarriage in season five and realised she doesn’t want to try for another pregnancy, one of Mel’s patients Marley (Rachel Drance) visits her the morning after the wedding to reveal that the couple who were going to adopt her baby have dropped out and she now wants Mel and Jack to be the parents.

Season seven will also undoubtedly feature more gripping drama within the town’s criminal underworld as Calvin (David Cubitt) has constantly been on the fringes and trying to worm his way back into the life of his ex Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) and their twins.

Charmaine goes so far as to discuss getting a restraining order on Calvin with Brie, but it looks like she was too late. After realising she was a no-show at the wedding, Jack heads to Charmaine’s place the next day to discover it ransacked. An eerie lullaby is playing, and the credits roll just as Jack opens the door to the nursery with a horrified look on his face.

But what’s inside? Has Charmaine been kidnapped or even killed? And are the babies safe? Fans will have to endure the agonising wait for season seven to find out.

Virgin River season 6 is available to stream on Netflix.
