Uncommon Café and Deli has opened its second branch right next to Tate Modern. Open from 8am to 8pm, you can start your day with a coffee and pastry and then return for lunch to try their Mediterranean meals, sandwiches, or salads.

When the inevitable afternoon slump hits, freshly baked cakes are in abundance, and upon realising there is nothing in the fridge for supper, you can get essential pantry items in their convenience store.

There are also Happy Hour deals between 4 and 6 pm, providing a perfect location for post-work drinks or an ideal place to recuperate after a tour of Tate Modern. On my visit, the friendly staff made it hard to leave after just a light lunch.

I enjoyed my meal on their gorgeous terrace, taking advantage of a rare sunny day, and tried a range of delicious dishes under £10. The aubergine parmigiana with its cheesy goodness and fresh rocket salad stole the show.

Their paninis, particularly the breaded chicken with fresh tomato, pesto and mozzarella, are hearty and delicious. They are huge, perfect for a satisfying lunch break.

Uncommon’s offerings go beyond Italian cuisine. I had the cheese and spinach Borek - a Turkish delight - and was pleasantly surprised by how light and non-greasy it was. They also serve British classics, such as a rich and creamy Steak and Ale pie.

To complement the meal, I opted for one of their white wines. At Uncommon, wine is a key feature; they also offer English sparkling wines, various champagnes, and an extensive range of red and white options.

After lunch, I couldn’t resist exploring the convenience store, packed with Mediterranean delights like fresh pecorino cheese, Spanish Torres crisps, and a variety of hams. It’s the perfect spot for gathering those essential 'picky bits'.

The friendly atmosphere made it difficult to leave, especially because the owner even let me have a mini play date with his puppy, Milo. It was clear the staff had a strong connection with the customers, as the owner was constantly chatting with the many regulars.

As it got chilly, I moved inside the café and decided to work from there until I felt ready for coffee and dessert.

I ordered a cappuccino with oat milk, which was excellent but a bit pricey at £3.80, plus 50p extra for alternative milk. They do offer a great morning deal, though - any coffee and pastry for just £6.

I also tried two freshly baked cakes - a carrot cake and a coconut and chocolate one. The coconut cake was the standout, with a moist sponge and rich but not too sweet chocolate that perfectly balanced the coconut’s natural sweetness.

For locals, Uncommon is sure to become a favourite hangout. For visitors, it’s the perfect spot to relax after a long day exploring Tate Modern.

Uncommon Deli has now opened by Tate Modern at 185D Park Street, SE1 9RW.
