The UK celebrates the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War on Saturday, marking Japan's surrender to the Allied forces.

Victory over Japan (or VJ) Day, comes more than three months after Victory in Europe (VE Day) in May, when Germany surrendered.

The 75th anniversary will be widely celebrated in the UK, with one of the key events being a flypast of the Red Arrows.

But when will the flypast be? Here we look at how to watch the famous planes fly overhead.

What is VJ Day?

Japan continued fighting more than three months after the end of the German surrender. The US was planning an invasion of the country, in which at least 500,000 American soldiers were expected to die.

But Japan was forced to surrender after the US dropped of two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early August 1945, which killed as many as 226,000 people.

The British soldiers who fought in the Far East sometimes called themselves "the Forgotten Army" in comparison with the troops fighting in Europe, who had more public attention.

It was a diverse army made up of troops from across the British Empire, including soldiers from India and east and west Africa.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "When the Second World War ended 75 years ago with the surrender of Japan, British soldiers, sailors and airmen were serving in the Far East, fighting hard to achieve victory - and were among the last to come home.

"On this anniversary I want to remember what we owe the veterans of the Far East campaign. They brought an end to the Second World War, they changed the course of history for the better, liberated South East Asia, and many paid the ultimate sacrifice.

"That's why on this remarkable anniversary - and every day hereafter - we will remember them."

Captain Sir Tom Moore, who fought in the Far East, said: "For me VJ Day will always be the most special of days, remembering all those who served in such challenging conditions in the Far East. It was VJ Day when the pain of war could finally start to fall away as peace was declared on all fronts.

"I respectfully ask Britain to stop whatever it is doing and take some time to remember. We must all take the time to stop, think and be thankful that were it not for the ultimate sacrifices made all those years ago by such a brave band of men and women we would not be enjoying the freedoms we have today, even in these current difficult times."

What are the Red Arrows?

The Red Arrows are the aerobatics display team within the RAF and were founded in 1965.

Known for leaving behind a trail of red, white and blue, they have performed at thousands of events in the UK and abroad.

When is the Red Arrows flypast on VJ Day?

The Red Arrows will fly over Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and London - and will cross over The Royal Hospital in Chelsea, home to three veterans of the war in Burma.

No time has yet been confirmed for the flypast, however on the 75th anniversary of VE Day back in May, the Arrows flew over London at 10:10am.

The showcase saw the famous red jets speed just 100 feet above Westminster and Buckingham Palace.

Meanwhile, RAF Typhoons roared over Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast to lift the nation's spirits.
