The Voice UK's Emma Willis has admitted that she didn't realise how tough this year's brutal format change would be on the contestants and their anxious families in the rooms watching.

Unlike in previous series, if none of the coaches hit their buzzers for an act they lost their right to see or speak to the contestant – which is particularly harsh (and a little bit awkward) for the auditionee.

And Emma – who is returning to host the ITV singing competition for its seventh series – has also hinted that there could be more twists and changes to come.

"When the change first came into play I thought it would be better from a viewer's point of view because I thought they would hear honest critiques from the coaches," Emma told Digital Spy at the show's launch in Manchester.

"It's very hard... I think the coaches are really good with constructive criticism. It's difficult if someone is upset – you don't want to make it worse.

"So I thought we might get a bit more of that [honest criticism] out of them when they're just talking to each other rather than turning, but I hadn't thought about how hard it is on the person and how hard it is on that room with the families."

Teasing new twists to the format, the Celebrity Big Brother host added: "At the moment, in this stage it's kind of how it always is. There might be a couple down the line..."

Olly Murs joins will.i.am, Jennifer Hudson and Sir Tom Jones on the coaching panel, and Emma has revealed the former X Factor star is already a big hit among the contestants.

"Olly Murs is so popular with the contestants!" she continued.

"He's really popular. He's winning the pitches against other coaches as well. Sometimes when there's a new person in that seat that doesn't necessarily happen because people aren't used to seeing them on the show but he's holding his own brilliantly.

"And he's getting on really well with the other coaches. It's fun, it's really good fun between them."

The Voice UK returns to ITV in 2018.
