Fear the Walking Dead's surprising Rick Grimes Easter egg in its season 5 premiere will eventually connect to the wider universe, franchise boss Scott Gimple has teased.

In episode 1 'Here to Help', Althea (Maggie Grace) discovered that a dead soldier was wearing a distinct symbol of three interlocking circles – the same symbol that featured on the helicopter seen in The Walking Dead season 9 episode 5, when Rick was whisked away.

Speaking to Alternative Mindz, Gimple said that Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead will remain "separate entities".

"Dwight is the thing they have in common most recently," he explained.

But Gimple added that the little Easter egg will lead to something significant "outside of both shows".

"There's a little thing that turns out into kind of a big thing that connects to something outside of both shows, which people will be seeing," he explained. "But they're two different shows. Two crazy different shows in a lot of ways."

What does Gimple mean by "outside of both shows"? Could he be referring to the Rick spin-off movie which will star Andrew Lincoln? Or maybe it's related to the third Walking Dead series in development which is planned for launch next year?

Fear the Walking Dead season 5 airs on AMC in the US and on AMC on BT TV in the UK.
