The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple has confirmed that Carl Grimes' comic book storylines will play out with other characters following his imminent death on screen.

Gimple's announcement comes after Sunday night's (December 10) midseason finale 'How It's Gotta Be', where it was revealed that Carl had been bitten by a walker two episodes previous.

While the character was still alive at the end of the episode, actor Chandler Riggs has confirmed Carl will definitely die in the midseason premiere, which will air February 26, 2018 on AMC.

His death marks The Walking Dead's biggest departure from the comic book series thus far, as Carl is still alive and very much a central character in Robert Kirkman's graphic novels.

However, Gimple has revealed Carl's storylines will still be featured in future seasons and will be played out through other characters.

"We're committed to keep telling the story from the comic book," Gimple told Entertainment Weekly.

"Yes, it's going to be different. And yes, Negan's relationship to Carl was a big part of the story moving forward, especially in the world changes we see early on. But, as usual, we do plan on telling those comic stories.

"It just will have to be with different people and it's a different way to tell those same stories. But we hope to still fulfil what those stories do."

Nonetheless, it seems not everyone is happy with Gimple's decision, as Chandler Riggs' father has since slammed the showrunner for killing Carl off.

In a now-deleted Facebook post, William Riggs blamed Gimple for breaking his promises that Chandler would be on the show for at least 'the next three years'.

"Watching Gimple fire my son 2 weeks before his 18th birthday after telling him they wanted him for the next 3 years was disappointing," he said.

"I never trusted Gimple or AMC, but Chandler did. I know how much it hurt him. But we do absolutely know how lucky we have been to be a part of it all and appreciate all the love from fans all these years."

His comments come after Chandler's own admission that it "wasn't his decision" to leave the show.

The Walking Dead returns February 25, 2018 on AMC in the US and February 26, 2018 on FOX in the UK.
