Carol Peletier has become one of the leading characters of The Walking Dead after nine seasons, but it could have been so different.

Back in the third season, during the prison storyline, the writers were planning on killing off Melissa McBride's character.

They changed their minds, instead offing T-Dog (IronE Singleton), and Walking Dead chief content officer Scott Gimple discussed with INSIDER at the AMC Network Summit how that shaped Carol's character in future seasons.

"[In] season 3, there was some conversation about maybe Carol going away," he said.

"I was dead set against it, because I thought it would be a great story to see a person who came from abuse become the hero, and not in an easy way. She herself had to struggle with the power that she found."

Gimple continued: "Carol's greatest story is that she found that she was strong. She found she had this superpower, but that it wouldn't be easy."

McBride said: "It's been so important to me to see her become strong.

"It's really hard for me to talk about that aspect of her without getting just boiled up inside because I know people like her that didn't make it.

"That aspect has always been very important to me. Empathy, we need more of that."

Back in 2016, director Greg Nicotero confirmed that there were indeed plans to write out Carol.
