Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead season eight finale 'Wrath'.
The episode saw the ever promised but elusive all-out war fizzle out entirely, after Eugene replaced all of the Saviors' bullets with ones that would backfire (as predicted), and Rick slashed Negan's throat before deciding to let him live and keep him prisoner, in hopes of rebuilding civilisation.
While a noble cause, it may not have been the best move, as Maggie, Jesus and later Daryl could be seen planning a mutiny of sorts against Rick and Michonne at the episode's close.
Nonetheless, some fans are now speculating the mutiny could be the least of everyone's problems in season nine of The Walking Dead, as they think they've spotted The Whisperers in the finale.
In the season eight finale, Rick's group could be seen walking alongside a series of poles that seemed to mark some kind of border (arguably, the stained glass windows near the tree where Rick sliced Negan continue that border).
Such poles are used by The Whisperers to mark their territory in The Walking Dead comics, leading excited fans to suspect The Whisperers were actually pretty close by.
Rick then pointed to a horde of walkers in the distance. And, given The Whisperers dress themselves in the skin of the dead, viewers are convinced it was actually them.
Here are just a few of their reactions:
Plot twist: that's not a horde, that's the whisperers. #TheWalkingDead- Cardinal Copia (@HeroesAndMyths) April 16, 2018
That hoard has to be hiding the whisperers, right? #TheWalkingDead- Kat J. (@CheshireKat_92) April 16, 2018
If those stain glass windows hanging from the tree aren’t decorations, they could be markers for the boundaries of the Whisperers’ territory. #TheWalkingDead- General Esdeath (@ManWithTheBFG) April 16, 2018
Scott Gimple has previously confirmed that The Whisperers are "absolutely" coming to The Walking Dead. So, was this our first glimpse?
The Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US and FOX and Now TV in the UK.
