The Walking Dead has finally revealed the mysterious story behind Michonne and Daryl Dixon's scars on their lower bodies.

Since noticing the 'X' scar on Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Daryl (Norman Reedus), fans have been patiently waiting to find out why they have the same branding on the same spot (some even came up with their own theories) – but the latest episode has finally explained all.

'Scars' shows a flashback where Michonne is pregnant with Rick Grimes' (Andrew Lincoln) unborn son and meeting with an old friend Jocelyn, who leads a small group of children. Since they knew each other from before, Michonne decides to accept them in.

However, Jocelyn and her pack escape Alexandria during the night, stealing supplies and children – including Judith Grimes.

After finding out that Judith and the rest of the children had been kidnapped, Michonne and Daryl go out looking for them, but it's not long before they're taken captive and tortured... leading to them receiving the 'X' scars.

The pair managed to escape, and Michonne was forced to kill her former friend in one of the darkest chapters of the AMC drama in quite a while.
