The Walking Dead fans can rest easy: All Out War won't go on indefinitely. It does have an end point.

Showrunner Scott Gimple revealed exactly when the fight between Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) will end, and it turns out that everything will be "resolved" by this season's finale.

That's 16 episodes' worth of All Out War action.

"The war will absolutely be resolved by the end of season 8," Gimple told Entertainment Weekly. "Absolutely."

Naturally, there may be concerns that the show is perhaps dragging the storyline out for too long given that the events are spread across just 12 issues in the comics. But the writers have already planned ahead.

While the war in the comics played out with Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Kingdom going up against the Saviors, the TV show brings two new factions to the fight.

Oceanside – the all-female community which Tara (Alanna Masterson) first stumbled across last season – was introduced much later in the comics. Although it hasn't been confirmed how much, if any, part they will play in season eight, given their history with the Saviors, surely we can expect them to get involved at some point.

And then there's the Scavengers, led by Jadis. Pollyanna McIntosh, who plays the leader, has been made a series regular, implying that this group – exclusive to the TV show – will be a major presence after they double-crossed Rick and revealed their alliance to Negan in the season seven finale.

With more factions and thus more characters to juggle, it seems the writers may have enough content to last an entire season.

In other news, the season eight premiere will be an extended episode.

The Walking Dead launches its eighth season on October 22 on AMC in the US and October 23 on FOX in the UK.
