Following this week's heart-wrenching episode, The Walking Dead is lining up a season 9 finale to remember – which will "change everything" for the heroes.

Showrunner Angela Kang recently spoke to Deadline about the upcoming episode, but don't worry, we've left out any spoilers for the latest instalment that might have been mentioned.

Discussing the mechanics behind the show's rip-roaring season finale (plus a bonus Game of Thrones nod), Angela explained: "Since this was the year we'd meet the Whisperers – who have adopted an animalistic, anti-civilisation, 'survival of the fittest' philosophy – we paired that with seeing more stories about how environmental obstacles and the breakdown of man-made infrastructure have affected our characters.

"Then I wanted to push that past the limits of what we've done on the show before, so in the finale – winter is coming!"

The zombie apocalypse veteran continued: "In season 10, the conflict with the Whisperers will amp up in terrifying and hopefully surprising ways, and we'll also discover something related to the last scene of this season – which I won't spoil – that will once again change everything for our heroes."

In a separate interview with EW, Kang also promised that things are "gonna take a little bit of a left turn in the finale", which is why that big thing that happened in this week's episode wasn't saved until next week.

"One of the big things I wanted to do this season is kind of play with the rhythms of our storytelling a bit here and there so that maybe the things are happening at times that you don't expect it to happen, so there's a little bit of an element of surprise for the audience," she explained.

"I also think there's something interesting about, 'Here's this gigantic thing that happened', and then, 'What happens next?' And seeing a taste of it."

The Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US and on FOX in the UK. You can also catch up on the show via NOW TV.
