Warning: The following article contains major spoilers for The Walking Dead season eight's midseason finale.

Nobody is angrier about The Walking Dead's heartbreaking midseason finale twist than cast member Chandler Riggs's father.

Sunday's bloody episode 'How It's Gotta Be' concluded with Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) revealing to his father Rick (Andrew Lincoln) that he'd been bitten by a walker, and thus was on death's door.

Eighteen-year-old Chandler Riggs has since confirmed that he will be leaving The Walking Dead in the second-half of the eighth season, although he stressed that it was not his choice to kill off Carl.

The decision has clearly been tough to take for the whole Riggs family. In a now-deleted Facebook message, Chandler Riggs's father ranted against both showrunner Scott M Gimple and US network AMC.

"Watching Gimple fire my son 2 weeks before his 18th birthday after telling him they wanted him for the next 3 years was disappointing," he wrote (via The Hollywood Reporter).

"I never trusted Gimple or AMC, but Chandler did. I know how much it hurt him. But we do absolutely know how lucky we have been to be a part of it all and appreciate all the love from fans all these years."

Chandler Riggs certainly didn't hide his own disappointment following 'How It's Gotta Be', although he was a bit more diplomatic than his father.

"Leaving Walking Dead wasn't my decision," Riggs acknowledged. "It was all story-related. It made sense story-wise for it to happen for Rick and Michonne and all the other characters.

"I didn't expect for Carl to ever get killed off but it serves a good purpose in the story."

In a post-episode interview on Sunday, Scott M Gimple promised that he didn't take the decision to kill off Carl Grimes lightly considering that the character is still alive in Robert Kirkman's comic book series.

"That is a bite on his side. It will play out as bites play out on the show," Gimple admitted on Talking Dead. "It's very important to Carl's story and the entire story, what happens in the next episode. I'm just focused on the fact that Carl right now is alive and he has some business to attend to.

"That is a one-way ticket. But I'd like to think that the things we see in the next episode are so important to his life and the other characters' lives."

Carl's demise will play out beginning with the mid-season premiere, airing on Sunday, February 25 in the US and Monday, February 26 in the UK.
