The Walking Dead actor Seth Gilliam has rubbished claims that his character Father Gabriel was responsible for Negan's escape in season nine's mid-season finale.

Although the priest was the last individual to speak with Jeffrey Dean Morgan's villain, Seth is now blaming a security guard who should've been present at the cell gate.

At a recent Walker Stalker Con New Jersey panel, Seth was asked whether he thought it was Gabriel's fault Negan was able to escape, to which he responded (via Insider): "I think he'd be pissed at the guard that he left on duty when he slammed the gate - shut and locked.

"There was a guard on duty when Gabriel slammed the cell door, locked, who was in charge of making sure that Negan did not get out.

"No, Father Gabriel did not let Negan out on purpose," he reiterated (half fired up, half having a laugh). "Father Gabriel slammed the f**king gate shut and it locked. And there was a f**king guard standing by. Next f**king question."

It was revealed back in November that the tenth season of The Walking Dead is already in development.

The Walking Dead will return on Sunday, February 10 on AMC in the US and most likely on Monday, February 11 on FOX in the UK. You can also catch up on the show via NOW TV.
