A virtual reality experience is in the works for The Walking Dead, so prepare to blow some walker brains out.

Theoretically speaking, of course.

Executive producer David Alpert has told Variety that a VR project for the series is in development by Skybound Entertainment, a multi-platform entertainment company Alpert founded with Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman.

Skybound offers an array of Walking Dead add-ons, such as video games, merchandise and action figures.

The news of a virtual reality extension to the post-apocalyptic world was revealed at the VRTL Summit in Los Angeles on Wednesday (April 27), so get ready to join Rick and team as they barrel through a zombie wasteland.

Or pull a Eugene, cut your losses, make the sensible decision to go with The Saviors. No judgement here.

Skybound has previously developed VR experiences with Samsung's Gear VR.

Like a lot of people, Alpert said that his first experience with the technology made him severely nauseous – and don't expect The Walking Dead's VR experience to be smooth sailing either.

"I work on The Walking Dead," he said. "Do you have any idea how hard I work to make people nauseous?

"If you can make people sick, that's actually a powerful tool in your arsenal."

The Walking Dead is currently filming its eighth season, and the good news is showrunner Scott Gimple has said the series will be leaving those single-arc episodes behind.

"We knew we wanted to mix it up in 8, and we knew what 8 was going to be and how that would dictate a very different kind of structure," Gimple explained.

"So, yeah, things are going to move, and possibly not have the kind of deep dives into characters in single episodes, but rather laying out the pieces as we go on."

The Walking Dead returns to AMC and Fox later in 2017.
