The Walking Dead is literally going to put fans in the season eight premiere.

We'll explain. The zombie drama is launching a dedicated Virtual Reality app through its US broadcaster in honour of The Walking Dead's 100th episode landing stateside on Sunday (October 22).

Once the series premiere 'Mercy' concludes, fans in the US who've download the AMC VR app will be able to watch an extra scene directed by executive producer Greg Nicotero and featuring Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan.

There's also a separate AMC VR experience that puts you right in the middle of a hungry zombie horde, as you can see from the preview below:

Fans can also trade kicks with the cast of Into the Badlands, and watch trailers for other AMC shows in the run-up to The Walking Dead's exclusive Negan scene premiering this weekend.

The AMC VR app is currently available to download in the US through iOS, Daydream Android and Gear VR and is being heavily hyped by the US network.

AMC's executive vice president of innovation, Mac McKean, said today: "With the launch of AMC VR, we are pleased to bring shows like The Walking Dead and Into the Badlands to life in an immersive and experiential ways.

"Viewers want to enter the worlds they watch on AMC, and this app brings them there."

The Walking Dead's executive producer David Alpert first confirmed in April that the show was working with Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman's company Skybound Entertainment to create immersive VR experiences for fans of the show.

Then in June, Skybound confirmed it was at work on multiple Walking Dead VR games that feature "an entirely new setting and cast of characters, which players will experience through a 'contextual interaction system'". So if you like AMC VR, there's more on the way!

The Walking Dead launches its eighth season on Sunday (October 22) on AMC in the US and Monday (October 23) on FOX in the UK.
