Plumstead and Wandsworth murders: Man, 18, stabbed to death minutes before second teen, 19, shot dead in two daylight attacks in south London

A 18-year-old man died after being stabbed in Wandsworth, minutes before another teenager was shot dead in Plumstead.

The first teenager was found critically injured at Deeside Road, Wandsworth, at 4.42pm on Friday and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.

In a second incident, armed police were called to reports of a shooting on Hartville Road, Plumstead, at 4.54pm, where a 19-year-old was found with critical injuries and later died.

It came within 12 hours on a day of violence that also saw another three men stabbed during a fight close to Clapham North tube station on Saturday morning.

Police said today that 14 people had been arrested over the three incidents, including six male teenagers - aged between 16 and 19 - who are being held arrested on suspicion of murdering the 18-year-old man. They remain in custody at a police station in west London.

A 17-year-old girl and three teenage boys - one aged 17 and two aged 16 - were arrested on suspicion of murdering the 19-year-old. They are being held at a station in south London.

Launching an appeal about the attack in Wandsworth, Superintendent Richard Smith, from the South West Command Unit, said: “The events of yesterday afternoon are a stark reminder that carrying a knife can easily result in the taking of someone’s life.

“A young man has died in the most tragic of circumstances and our thoughts remain with his family.

“Officers will be patrolling the area throughout the weekend and are available to speak to residents if they have any concerns, or wish to pass on any information regarding the murder or any other issues in the local area.

“I would urge those who witnessed the incident, but who have yet to speak with officers, to please come forward and provide us with any information that you can.”

Marina Paget, 22, who lives in the area, said: "I walked past at 2.30pm and I didn't see anything, but when I came back from work at 5.30pm it was all going on.

"I walked past I saw what looked like the body on the floor covered in a bag and there were 50 people around, loads of people, two or three ambulances."

A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Sunday.

In the second incident, armed police were called reports of a shooting in a car park close to Plumstead Railway Station.

The victim was found with critical injuries. The London Ambulance and the London Air Ambulance attended, but the teenager died at the scene a short while later.

His next of kin have been informed although formal identification is yet to take place.

A post-mortem examination is due to be held on Saturday.

Detective Inspector John Marriott, said: “I am appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time, who saw or heard anything suspicious, to contact police.

“The shooting took place not far from Plumstead Railway Station and I would urge anyone who was commuting to or from this station to speak with us. It was also sunny at the time and a number of people would have been enjoying the weather in the area of Plumstead Gardens; I need you to come forward.

“We currently have four people in custody but I need further information to help progress this investigation.”

He said there would be enhanced police presence and that a section 60 order had been authorised in Greenwich and Bexley.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he was "sickened" by the two deaths.

He said: "I am sickened to hear that two young lives have been ended within minutes of each other in Wandsworth and Greenwich.

"Our overstretched police are working around the clock to keep Londoners safe. They need our support to end this scourge of violence.

"Anybody who has information about what happened either in Wandsworth or Greenwich should do the right thing and call the police."

Tooting MP Rosena Allin-Khan said the suspected murder on Deeside Road was "heartbreaking" and "absolutely tragic".

"My heart goes out to the family of this victim after this absolutely tragic incident," she wrote on Twitter.

"I spoke at length with people on the Aboyne Estate tonight, anyone with concerns can contact me - I'm here to listen.

"Sending love to the Tooting family tonight - this is heartbreaking."

In the third incident, at around 3.22am on Saturday, police were called to Bedford Road in Clapham following reports of a fight.

Three men were found with stab and slash injuries. The condition of two of the men is unknown, while the third has injuries which are not life-threatening or life-changing.

Four men were arrested in connection with the incident - two for violent disorder, one accused of carrying a bladed instrument and another for possession of a Taser - and have been taken into custody at a south London police station.
