Jay Slater's heartbroken mother has spoken of her 'living nightmare' and says she wished she'd told her son not to go to Tenerife before he went missing.

The 19-year-old, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, was reported missing by his friends on Monday (June 17). He had flown out to holiday on the island with pals for the NRG music festival but disappeared after going to stay with people he met after a night out.

A major search is continuing on the Spanish island, involving police dogs, mountain rescue teams and swathes of Jay's friends and family.

Speaking to ITV News, Jay's mum Debbie Duncan, who has since also flown out to Tenerife, described the 'absolute nightmare' she is living through.

"I wouldn't wish this on anybody. I want my baby back," she said as she broke down in tears. "It's a nightmare, an absolute living nightmare.

"He'd been saving up, looking so forward to this event, absolutely buzzing about it. [It was the] third day of the NRG Festival and this has happened.

"I was loving that he was going and saying 'you'll love it'. Now I just wish I hadn't encouraged him to go. I wish I'd have said 'don't go to Tenerife'."

Jay, who had travelled to the island to attend the NRG Festival, last spoke to his friend Lucy at around 8am on Monday, telling her that his phone was going to die, he needed a drink of water and had no idea where he was.

His phone location last 'pinged' in the Rural de Teno park, close to a popular hiking route and the village of Masca. Following his disappearance, Jay's mum Debbie flew out to the island on Tuesday to help with the search with her eldest son Zak.

A Civil Guard spokeswoman in Tenerife said officers were working to 'investigate all the possibilities'. She confirmed that a large-scale search operation was ongoing, with the search today being moved to tourist hotspots in the south of the island.

The Foreign Office also confirmed on Tuesday that officials were supporting Jay's family. They added that they are in touch with the local authorities in Tenerife.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."
