Nottingham's tram operator has warned passengers and drivers to be aware of the disruption that will be caused by "crucial" repairs to part of the network. Nottingham Express Transit (NET) will be carrying out overnight network maintenance work on Sunday, November 17, which will halt services to many of the city's busiest tram stops.

No trams will run between the University of Nottingham and Cator Lane tram stops from 4pm on November 17 until the end of service on that day, with Central College, Chilwell High Road, Beeston Centre, Middle Street and University Boulevard all closed during this time.

NET said the closure was needed so it could make adjustments to the electricity wires within its overhead line equipment, strengthening the network and reducing the risk of technical failure. Trevor Stocker, head of operations at NET, explained the work would complete repairs on overhead cables damaged last year.

"This short, planned maintenance work is a response to an incident that happened last year, causing the contact wire to be damaged and disconnected from the overhead line on part of our network," he said. "Now that the wire has been re-installed, our engineers must complete the final part of the work which is taking place this November.

“As well as our ongoing maintenance work, this type of direct repair is crucial for ensuring the optimal safety and reliability for our tram users, and we thank the public for their patience." NET has explained the maintenance work could have an impact on surrounding roads, particularly the Beeston Interchange.

Tram and car users have been asked to plan ahead by allowing additional time for journeys. A replacement bus service will be in place from 4pm on Sunday, November 17, but this will only collect passengers from the University of Nottingham and Cator Lane tram stops and will not be stopping at any others in between.

Regular service will continue across the rest of NET's tram network throughout the maintenance period.
