Warning to anyone who keeps milk in their fridge door
Many households keep milk in the door of their fridge and stand the bottle upright to prevent leaks. However, experts are now advising against this common practice.
According to kitchen appliance manufacturer Beko, storing milk this way could be shortening the life of our groceries. The company has issued a warning that poor fridge organisation can impact the longevity of our food, especially milk.
Salah Sun, Head of Product Management at Beko, stated: "The way we organise our fridges can make or break our efforts to reduce food waste. Most people don't realise that poor fridge organisation isn't just about aesthetics – it directly impacts food longevity and your household budget.

"Temperature fluctuates within your fridge, so storing items in the right zones is crucial. The bottom shelf, being the coldest, is perfect for raw meats, while the middle shelves maintain ideal conditions for dairy and prepared foods. The door, often used for milk, is actually the warmest area due to frequent opening."
Beko highlighted that the right organisation in our fridges is an essential practice to prevent food and drinks going off. They advise: "We recommend keeping more stable items like condiments and drinks in the door compartments, moving milk to the middle shelf where temperatures remain more constant."
They clarified that by maintaining optimal storage conditions, the longevity of your fresh produce can be extended. This not only reduces waste but also the frequency of shopping trips, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The refrigeration company stated that UK households typically throw away around £250 worth of food per person each year, equating to £1,000 for a family of four.
