A warning has been issued to anyone who owns two types of cars in Lancashire after spate of thefts.

Police are urging people with Land Rovers and Range Rovers to be vigilant after 15 vehicles were reported stolen so far in September. Officers are also advising owners to take advantage of a free security upgrade being offered by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).

Those eligible for a security upgrade will have received a vehicle recall letter directly from JLR. No further details have been released about where the vehicles were stolen.

In a statement issued today (September 27), a force spokesperson said: "Organised car thieves are targeting Land Rovers and Range Rovers in the Lancashire area. In September there have been 15 reported as stolen.

"We would urge anybody who owns this type of vehicle to ensure that they are taking advantage of the free security upgrade offered by Jaguar Land Rover. Owners of vehicles eligible for a security upgrade will have received a vehicle recall letter directly from JLR.

"Here is some additional security advice for vehicle owners:

  • Consider steering locks, alarms, tracking devices and immobilisers and if you have them, use them

  • Consider using a faraday bag. Faraday bags can block the signals needed for copying keyless entry systems and can provide that extra level of security in a simple way

  • Don’t leave spare keys or satnavs in your vehicle, even in the glove box

  • At home, don’t leave car keys in clear view from windows or in reach from the letter box

  • Never leave the engine running, especially in frosty weather

  • Use anti-tamper or security screws on your registration plate – they can be easily fitted but can’t be removed using standard tools. These are available from various online retailers, DIY and vehicle maintenance stores.
