Visitors to a popular North Staffordshire park have found the main car park closed as a multi-million pound project to transform a leisure centre gets underway. The doors have closed to Leek's Brough Park Leisure Centre with the facility not set to reopen until 2026.

Now the main car park outside the facility, which is used by scores of visitors going to the surrounding Brough Park, has been shut off. Instead families are using the adjoining, and smaller car park to the side.

Fencing and a gate has been installed on the main car park with units also erected as part of the leisure centre overhaul. StokeonTrentLive previously reported how the 18-month project will see the facility transformed with a new six-lane 25-metre swimming pool, an additional training pool, and a bigger and better gym.

Affected customers are being invited to use Biddulph Valley Leisure Centre, in Biddulph, and South Moorlands Leisure Centre, in Cheadle - with some classes continuing at Birchall Pavilion, in Leek.

The Brough Park closure comes as Staffordshire Moorlands District Council leisure centres are now operated by Alliance Leisure under the MyActive brand from October 1 after replacing Parkwood. Memberships and direct debits will automatically switch to MyActive.

Councillor Matt Swindlehurst, cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: “We’re starting an exciting new chapter for our leisure centres to ensure they play a key role in the health and wellbeing of all our residents. The name above the door will change and the staff will be wearing smart new uniforms but I want to reassure everyone who uses our leisure centres that we’ve worked hard to ensure that this transition is a smooth and seamless one.

“We have some exciting improvements planned for our services and facilities – including the full redevelopment of Brough Park – and we’re looking forward to sharing those plans in due course. Moving more is at the heart of good health and wellbeing and MyActive will help everyone become more active. So we’re looking forward to welcoming all our customers at our centres and working with you to deliver the services you deserve.”
