Warning over horsefly invasion in the UK - as victims share pictures of bites

This summer’s warm weather has seen a surge in reports of horsefly bites – and they’re very alarming.

Horseflies – also known as clegs – are a biting insect larger than midges or mosquitoes, and bites can turn very nasty indeed.

Female horseflies feed on human blood when they’re producing their eggs – and their bites can cause huge blisters and even lead to visits to A&E.

The bites are much worse than midge bites, because horseflies cut into the skin rather than piercing it – which can lead to infections.

They range from 1cm to an inch in size – and are often found near grassy areas, pools and woodlands.

Only the females bite using their jagged, saw-like teeth – and anti-coagulant which stops the blood from clotting.

Doctors advise that if you’re stung, wash the affected area with soap and water, and apply a cold compress or ice pack.

Raise the affected area if possible and avoid scratching.
