A warning has been issued over half a million cars which are being urgently recalled. Motorists with Ford, Jeep or Chevrolet cars on their driveway have been warned to check whether they are impacted by the car recalls after Christmas.

Ford Motor is recalling more than 270,000 cars over potential battery failure that could cause a loss of power, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). And it isn't the only motoring group making a similar move.

Indeed, Stellantis - the Jeep owner - has issued a notice for owners of Jeep Cherokee models between the years 2017 and 2019 in response to a loss of drive power from a damaged power transfer unit (PTU).

Recall documents state: "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles. The remedy is under development."

Ford

According to a notice first reported to NHTSA on Friday, the recall covers 272,817 Bronco and Maverick vehicles that contain 12-volt batteries manufactured by Chinese company Camel Battery.

The battery in affected vehicles may experience internal failures, leading to battery degradation while driving. This can cause sudden battery failure, resulting in the loss of electric-powered features including hazard lights. It can also cause a loss of driving power, or render vehicles unable to restart or stall after an auto stop/start or when coming to a stop at low speed.

Owners of recalled cars should bring them to their closest Ford dealer who will inspect and replace the 12-volt battery for free if necessary. Notifications are expected to be sent via mail by 3 February.

Stellantis

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, is recalling more than 63,000 Jeep Cherokees because of a defect that causes the vehicles to lose power and impede parking, increasing the risk of a crash, according to a recall notice posted Wednesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

As a result of a poorly seated input shaft ring, the vehicles' "power transfer unit (PTU) may become damaged and disengage the transmission and differential, resulting in a loss of drive power and/or loss of park function," the recall documents state.

"A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash. A loss of park function can cause an unintended vehicle rollaway, which can increase the risk of a crash or injury."

General Motors

Chevrolet is recalling 2,890 all-wheel-drive Equinox EVs in the U.S. due to a software issue in the adaptive cruise control system that may prevent the brakes from activating when they’re supposed to, per a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall affects Equinox EV models not equipped with General Motors’ Super Cruise driver-assistance system. That is to say, front-wheel-drive versions and models with Super Cruise are not affected. The NHTSA report states that while the system can detect the need to slow down, an incorrect software calibration may prevent the braking function from engaging.
