Drivers are being warned of a series of overnight road closures on a busy Leicester route. Leicester City Council said it will be shutting part of St Margaret's Way for three nights at the end of May and start of June.

The road will be off-limits to inbound traffic between Abbey Park Road and Riverside Park/St Margaret’s Pasture. The closures will be from 9pm on Friday, May 31; Monday, June 3 and Tuesday, June 4.

The road will reopen to traffic at 5am the next morning. The council said there will be “short, well-signed diversions” in place which will take drivers via Abbey Park Road, Belgrave Gate and Burleys Way.

The closures are needed to allow “essential bridge maintenance work” to the St Margaret's Way river bridge to be carried out, the authority added. This will include repairing vehicle damage to the bridge’s parapets.

A Leicester City Council spokesman said: “These overnight closures are required while essential maintenance and repair work is carried out to the St Margaret’s Way river bridge. The work will be carried over three nights to minimise disruption to traffic using this busy route.”
