Warning over cost of living text scam
People are reportedly being targeted by a suspected scam message telling people they are eligible for an upcoming Cost of Living payment.
The text messages are asking the recipients to apply for a subsidy which will then be reviewed, followed by a clickable link. They suggest that the payment will be made in November by either the UK Home Office or the Department for Work and Pensions.
One of the messages reads: “UK Home Office notice for you: According to the reduction of Winter heating subsidies, the living expenses subsidy will be paid as a result of the parliamentary decision.

“When you receive the information, it means that you have obtained the qualification to apply. The application channel will be closed on October 19, 2024.
“Please update the information in the link and we will distribute the living allowance in early November. Thank you for your support to the UK Home Office.”
Always be aware of scams and if you have received this text or a similar one, please report it to the National Cyber Security Centre at report@phishing.gov.uk or by forwarding it to 7726.
