Police have issued a warning to those going to to Coventry's Festival of Christmas tonight. The event is replacing the city's much-loved Christmas light switch-on, which the council has said it cannot stage due to 'financial pressures.

The festival will see a number of roaming acts take place across the city centre. Anticipating crowds, Coventry police officers have issued an appeal on its pages on social media about the event.

It urges people to stay safe and urges locals to 'stay alert to people filming security exits, entrances or CCTV.'

Officers say that if anyone sees something that 'doesn't feel right' to tell member of staff, security or police. The full post reads: "You can play your part in keeping people safe when you are out over the festive period.

"Stay alert to people filming security exits, entrances or CCTV. If you're heading to tonight's lights switch on, tell a member of staff, security or police if you see something that doesn't feel right.

"You won’t be wasting our time. Always call 999 in an emergency."
