Warning to UK tourists as amber alert issued for Balearic Islands
Holidaymakers are warned of dangerous sea conditions in the Balearic Islands in the coming days with amber and yellow alerts issued. Strong winds of up to 60km/h and large waves are expected off the coast of Menorca, while Majora and Ibiza are forecast to experience strong coastal gusts.
Spain’s national meteorological agency Aemet has issued an amber ‘important risk’ alert for Menorca, which is in force today, Friday September 13, from 8am local time until 6pm. It warns of: “Northerly swell of four to 5 metres with northerly winds of 50 to 60km/h (force six to seven).”
Yellow warnings for strong winds and large waves have also been issued for Majorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Winds of up to 60km/h are forecast in Majorca, with waves of up to three metres.

By Saturday the coastal warning for Menorca is downgraded to a yellow alert, in place from midnight on Friday until 9pm on Saturday, September 14. Winds of 40 to 60km/h (force six to seven) are expected, along with waves of two to four metres. No yellow warnings are in place for Ibiza, but they are still in place for Majorca on Saturday for waves of up to 3m off the coast.
Conditions are set to improve by Sunday, with all warnings removed by forecasters except for a yellow warning for waves of up to two metres off the Menorcan coast remains for Sunday. The warnings for the Balearic Islands come after a state of ‘pre-alert’ was issued for the Canary Islands on Thursday due to dangerous sea conditions.
Strong coastal winds had also been forecast for Tenerife and Gran Canaria, resulting in strong swells. Tourists were urged to avoid swimming in unmonitored areas, follow lifeguard instructions and flag systems on beaches.
