A 900-horsepower electric utility van beat a Ferrari and a Nissan GT-R in a drag race

The electric-car industry right now is, without a doubt, dominated by Tesla.

By now, most people are well aware of the Model S sedan, the Model X SUV, and the forthcoming Model 3 entry-level sedan.

In the last couple of years, Tesla has touted its cars' ridiculously fast drivetrains which, in the case of the Model S P100D — the fastest version you can buy — can surge from zero to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds.

Other players in the electric-car market are trying to catch up. And in the case of a little-known company called Atieva, it doesn't just want to catch up — it wants to smoke the competition.

The Chinese-funded company fitted its 900-horsepower, all-wheel-drive electric powertrain to a utility van to show off its performance capabilities. The van, nicknamed "Edna," is just a mule, Road and Track reported — but the underpinnings will eventually show up in Atieva's own future sedan.

In the meantime, you need something to compare that kind of power to, so the company lined up a bunch of cars, including a Ferrari 458 Speciale, a Nissan GT-R, and some Tesla Model S cars for a few quarter-mile runs. The result is pretty stunning.
