Watch: You Won’t Believe This Adorable Bear Cub Was Mistaken For A Dog

You know how it is: Find an adorable stray puppy, take it in, find out it’s a bear.

This is what happened to a chap in China, who adopted a ‘puppy’ he’d found roaming the streets, only to be told it was an endangered bear cub.

The big-hearted farmer found his new furry friend several weeks ago and, assuming it was a Kunming wolfdog, took it in.

Alarm bells began to sound when the man realised his new pet had no tail - as well as dextrous paws and an unfamiliar growl.

Animal officials swiftly identified the problem: this domestic pet dog was actually an endangered Asian black bear, recognisable by the patch of white fur on its chest.

It’s believed that the cub became separated from his mum in a nearby forest, before being found by the farmer in Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, in south-west China’s Yunnan Province.

If the man hadn’t taken it in, it’s likely that the cub would have been killed or bred in secret by others if they had recognised its species.

Officials have now sent the cub to the local Dehong Prefecture Wildlife Shelter for breeding.

Reports said the cub will be kept there until it learns how to survive on its own in tough natural conditions, after which it will be released back into the forests.

Asian black bears, like the equally endangered giant pandas, are threatened by poaching, with their paws especially sought-after as a delicacy.

The capture, killing, breeding, and trading of the animals is strictly forbidden in China, with offenders facing up to 10 years in prison or – in the case of trafficking pandas – even death.
