Watch: Blind man straps camera to guide dog to show how he gets abused on public transport

A blind former doctor has attached a camera to his guide dog in an attempt to show people the abuse he gets every day.

Amit Patel fitted the GoPro camera to his dog Kika’s back and went out and about in London.

The footage shows how the 37-year-old former doctor and his dog are both subjected to abuse by complete strangers on the street and on public transport.

People can be seen failing to give up their seats for Amit and ignoring hi when he asked for help.

Unbelievably, some travellers were even caught hitting Kika with their bags and umbrellas, while one passenger was filmed putting her bags on an empty seat instead of letting Amit sit down.

Amit, who lost his sight five years ago to keratoconus, uploads the footage to his computer on a daily basis and his wife Seema will watch it and review all the times where people failed to help out her husband.

Kika is one of just 5% of guide dogs who is trained to take their owners on escalators – and that is where the problems started, according to Amit.

He explained: “Kika always sits to my left hand side so we often block the escalator, and people will hit her with bags and umbrellas to get her to move out of the way.

“The worst part is the tutting and negative comments behind me

“People are so rude and arrogant and assume they can do whatever they want.”

On one shocking occasion, a woman tried to force Amit apologise for holding people up because he was blind.

More footage taken by the camera also shows taxi drivers refusing to stop for Amit, while others stop to touch Kika, which distracts her from her job.

Amit, who said travelling on public transport makes him feel like a “sacred little boy” now volunteers with RNIB, Action for Blind People, and Guide Dogs for the Blind to help coach new guide dog users.
